WOMEN WHO SELL WITH RACHAEL MANNING

‘Women Who Sell’ is all about showcasing women who sell and are thriving and challenging stereotypes. We feature real perspectives of what it’s like being someone that identifies as a woman in Sales, the barriers and the breakthroughs.

Here, Rachael Manning, Corporate Sales Manager at REKOM UK shares her take.

What is your job title?

Corporate Sales Manager

How did you get into sales and what makes it the career of your choice?

Sales wasn’t necessarily something I had aspired to do, however, as I am sure most people can relate, it was something I fell into.

I started off in hospitality which led me to doing events and eventually, into events and sales. I have now been working in sales for over 5 years, and I can honestly say I have grown a passion and love for it!

I love being in a people-facing role and creating new relationships with people and businesses and as a result of my job I have met so many wonderful people.

Are there any barriers you have faced as a woman working in sales, and how have you overcome them?

Yes, I have faced many barriers. My biggest is not being heard.

Often I have had great ideas or solutions but they have just been cast aside or ignored, for some reason people struggle to take women in sales seriously and at times I’ve been treated poorly. As a result, I have really pushed hard to have my voice heard and to be seen in the industry.

Sales is still very much a male-dominated industry and I think it is important to be seen, to be respected and to be heard because women are just as creative (even more so in my opinion!) and hard-working as anyone.

What do you like the most about being a woman in sales?

I like the confidence it has given me.

Working in sales has enhanced my people skills, given me confidence, and allowed me to become more assertive. I am at a place now where I am in a position where I can make real change and have got respect and support from those around me and in my industry.

What advice do you have for a woman wanting to get into sales and those wanting to advance?

If you want a career in sales then go for it.

Don’t give up and don’t let anyone dictate your career or choices. I have never been one not to speak my mind and I believe it has enabled me to stand my ground and be the strong woman that I am today. If you have a great idea, pitch or whatever then own that room. Always remember to back yourself up and be confident.

You got this!
