WHY DO YOU HAVE A GAP IN YOUR CV? TOP TIPS TO ANSWER THIS INTERVIEW QUESTION
Gaps in a CV could have an entire raft of reasons. Gap years, career breaks, illness, family circumstances - life doesn’t go smoothly and doesn’t revolve around careers and work.
For some, especially when returning after a gap, applying for a job can be daunting and even after having been back in professional life, a gap even years ago can make job seekers feel less competitive.
If you gained related skills, add them on there
For example, if you took a year to see the world, ‘personal development’ alongside gained skills and traits such as scheduling, prioritising and problem solving skills as well as development of self-confidence and networking could be absolutely sufficient.
Health, Family, or Private reasons
These are absolutely valid and explanatory of a ‘gap’ date bracket on your CV also. During an interview the interviewer may ask about it and it’s best to be prepared for it.
But you don’t have to share full details, especially if you feel uneasy about it but there is no reason or gap you’d need to be ashamed about.
Don’t let it hold you back
Chances are that the ‘gap’ won’t matter.
A potential employer will care about the fact and question if you can do the job and if you fit in with the team - they care about what’s ahead and the mindset and circumstances you are in right now. Look forward, bring the focus and conversation back to why you want the job and are the best person for it. No need to be nervous about the mention on your CV and during the interview.
