Why More Women Are Thriving in Insurance

The insurance industry is changing and with it, so are the people leading the charge.

Traditionally perceived as a male-dominated sector, insurance is now at a pivotal point where women are not just entering the industry, they’re making a lasting impact across broking, underwriting, loss adjusting, claims, and executive leadership.

As the industry shifts to become more consultative, client-facing and tech-enabled, it needs voices and perspectives from across the board - and that includes more women in decision-making roles.

Why Women Should Consider a Career in Insurance

Longevity and Stability

Insurance is a career that offers long-term security. With an ageing workforce and a growing demand for succession planning, there's a genuine opportunity for professionals - particularly women - to enter the market and progress into more senior positions at pace.

Clear Career Paths

From Claims Handlers to Underwriters, Commercial Account Executives to Risk Managers, the insurance industry offers multiple entry points and structured progression routes. Many firms also support Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications, giving professionals a clear development path and recognised credentials.

Strong Earning Potential

While salaries vary by role, region and experience, the earning potential within insurance is significant. For women with ambition and drive, insurance is a field where performance is rewarded.

A Platform to Make a Difference

Insurance isn’t just about numbers - it’s about helping people recover from some of life’s biggest challenges. Whether it’s managing a complex property claim or advising a business on risk mitigation, the impact of your work is real and lasting.

Representation is Growing

We are starting to see more women rise through the ranks into leadership roles, sitting on boards, heading up client divisions, and shaping the future of the profession.

But while representation at senior levels is improving, it still doesn’t reflect the talent that exists at the entry and mid-levels. According to Insurance Times, only around 28% of executive roles in insurance are held by women. To create meaningful change, we need more visibility of women at the top - and more encouragement for women at the start of their journey.

Advice for Women Entering the Industry

Find a mentor

Whether it’s a line manager, senior broker, or external industry contact, seek out someone who can guide and advocate for you.

Get Chartered

Gaining industry-recognised qualifications like those offered by the CII can help open doors and provide credibility early in your career.

Speak up

The insurance world is fast-paced and built on strong communication. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn and voice your thoughts.

Network

Join industry bodies, attend events, and connect with other women in insurance. Relationships drive the sector - and the sooner you build your network, the stronger your career foundations will be.
