3 QUALITIES EVERY EMPLOYEE SHOULD HAVE

Qualifications, work experience, and professional skills matter. They’re a key indicator of whether you’ll be suitable for the role or not. But they’re not the only indicator.

When hiring, employers can get so focused on the nature of the role, that they forget about the nature of the person.

They forget about hiring:

  • Someone with a great work ethic

  • Someone with passion

  • Someone who will get along with the team

  • Someone who will inspire the team

If you’re looking for an employee with commitment, reliability, and someone who won’t just fit in with the culture, but improve it – it’s time to look beyond the CV.

And maybe you’re an employee, either looking for a new role or looking to improve in your current one – these 3 qualities will help you to stand out to your manager and approach your role in a far better way.

ADAPTABILITY

No matter what role, seniority, or industry you’re in – there will always be changes.

There will always be new challenges, a situation to resolve, and new processes to put in place.

Especially if you’re trying to climb the career ladder, being not just capable of change, but expectant of change, where you uphold a positive and motivated attitude, will truly set you apart and build trust with your manager. ‘Fast-pace’ defines most work environments, and employers want to know you’re capable of thriving in that.

(Most) managers don’t plan to pressurise you by giving you a last-minute project, or completely switching plans, but the reality is that these things happen. Every business wants to increase profit, stay relevant, and make things run smoothly, and if you can show yourself to be willing to adapt and help these things happen, you’ll be a crucial part of their growth.

And as a result, you’ll be far more suited for a leadership role. With strong adaptability skills, you can navigate unexpected situations and equip those around you.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Positivity is good for two reasons:

POSITIVITY IS GOOD FOR YOUR OWN SUCCESS

Pessimism creates stress, oftentimes unnecessary stress that leads to burnout, unproductivity, and a breakdown of creativity and innovation… all the things that will lead to failure.

On the other hand, if you approach work optimistically, always bringing a can-do attitude to new tasks and challenges will remind you of your capabilities, whilst helping you to persevere through challenges and setbacks.

POSITIVITY IS GOOD FOR THE COMPANY CULTURE

Let’s be honest - no one wants to work with Debbie Downer.

And this isn’t referring to stressful days or days where you just don’t feel 100%. This is referring to a constant negative attitude that impacts people daily.

Negativity impacts your ability to collaborate, build meaningful relationships, and encourage others in their roles. Essentially, it limits you from being able to make the most of your team members, from the things you can learn from them, and the fun times you can have with them.

And this doesn’t just impact your colleagues, but also your managers. Negativity makes you unteachable, and even arrogant to learn new things. Instead, being an employee who is always up to learning new things and getting involved with teamwork will be an employee with lots of opportunities and lots of promotions.

STRONG WORK ETHIC

This is a no-brainer.

You could be the most intelligent person in the room, the one with the most qualifications, and the one with the most experience – but if you have a poor work ethic, you’ll quickly discover success isn’t on your side.

There’s a small percentage of individuals who worked hard and didn’t succeed in their jobs, but a huge percentage of individuals who carried an entitled attitude, with an expectation of success, who didn’t amount to it.

Employees who put in the effort to improve and learn new things (even the things they find difficult), will build tremendous trust and respect. Not just with their managers, but their team members also.
